Program Leaders

The programs of WellSpring are lead by a large group of gifted people coming from diverse backgrounds.

Fr Bill Attard is Parish Priest of St Michael's Catholic Church, Ashburton and lecturer in Pastoral Studies at Catholic Theological College. He is a Spiritual director and counselling psychologist.

Mrs Geraldine Backowski is a spiritual director and retreat leader with a special interest in exploring a spirituality of the moment.

Rev Peter Bentley is Director of WellSpring and an Associate Pastor of Ashburton Baptist Church. He is a Retreat Leader and Spiritual Director, with a special interest in Art, Australian spirituality and the Enneagram.

Mr Gordon Carter has studied and trained overseas and is an experienced teacher of the Enneagram.

Mrs Bronwyn Checkley is a member of the pastoral team at Blackburn Community Church of Christ, leading the prayer and spirituality ministry.

Dr Austin Cooper is head of Department of Church History at the Catholic Theological College. He has read widely in Christian Spirituality and written several books in this area.

Rev Ian Crooks is a Benadictine Oblate and Anglican vicar, and is married to Margaret who is a naturopath. They own and run a retreat and natural health centre in Buxton.

Ms Vicki Demmer is a retreat leader and spiritual director with a particular interest in Celtic spirituality, and in movement and dance.

Mrs Margaret Donald has a background in nursing and is a spiritual director with a particular interest in art, quiet days and retreats.

Sr Denise Doyle, a sister of mercy, is an educator with both teaching and leadership experience in Catholic secondary education. Denise has a Master of Arts in Celtic Studies from the University of Sydney and recently has been awarded a Master in Philosophy in Celtic Studies for her research into the iconography of the Book of Kells.

Dr Keith Dyer has taught in Victoria, the Solomon Islands, Switzerland and Tennessee. Since 1994, he has been Professor of New Testament and Greek at Whitley College. Besides family, church and work commitments, he has published a book and several articles on Mark's Gospel.

Rev Jenni Georgiadis is an ordained Churches of Christ minister, a significant part of her ministry in her community being spiritual direction. She has a particular interest in retreats, quiet days and providing space for the worship of God in diverse and creative ways.

Rev Ron Ham is Associate Pastor at Ashburton Baptist Church and at Paisley Street Footscray, and is former minister at Collins Street Baptist. Ron has a special interest in pastoral care and preaching.

Rev Marilyn Hinton is an ordained Churches of Christ minister, spiritual director and retreat leader.

Dr Simon Holt is warden at Whitley College and has a particular interest in grounding spirituality in everyday life.

Mrs Pam Hyden has been a spiritual director for the past 9 years, formerly leading Weekends for Women at Anglican Retreat House, Cheltenham. Now working in pastoral ministry at Richmond Uniting Church, she has a special interest in Australian Spirituality.

Ms Merrill Kitchen trained as a medical scientist before taking on Theology. She is currently Principal of Churches of Christ Theological College, President of the Melbourne College of Divinity and a member of the WellSpring Board.

Rev Jill Manton is Director of Training at the WellSpring Centre. Her focus in ministry lies in the areas of Spiritual Formation, Spiritual Direction, prayer, reconciliation and peace making.

Mrs Jenny Marr is a Music Therapist with a special interest in the use of Music and Imagery in spiritual exploration and growth, and is a member of Westgate Baptist Church.

Mrs Maria McCormack is a retreat leader and a spiritual director. She also works with the Passionist Community co-facilitating retreat days at the Holy Cross Centre, Templestowe.

Rev Dr Tim McCowan is Director of Reconciliation and Peacemaking at WellSpring, including the “Building bridges through interfaith dialogue in schools” program. He is also lecturer in Spirituality at the Churches of Christ Theological College, a trained spiritual director, and part-time pastor of Moreland Baptist Church.”

Rev. Keith Pickett is a Baptist pastor with special interest in spiritual direction, retreats and quiet days.

Ms Barbara Rautman has a teaching background including some time as a school chaplain, with a love of poetry and art. She worships in the Quaker tradition, has studied overseas and is committed to helping people grow in their faith, especially through quiet days and spiritual direction.

Rev Dr Frank Rees teaches theology at Whitley College, Melbourne. He is the author of several books and has wide pastoral experience in addition to his teaching ministry. He has a particular interest in the way theology and life-stories contribute to each other.

Dr Clair Renkin is a Lecturer in The History of Religious Art at Yarra Theological Union and coordinates the Masters of Arts: Spirituality as part of the Christian Spirituality Centre Program.

Mrs Julie Renner has a commitment to the spiritual formation and empowerment of lay people and a special interest in cultural diversity and celebration of difference.

Rev Judy Rigby is a Wesleyan Methodist minister, involved in church planting in Caroline Springs. She has studied in the USA and is committed to ministry in the local community, and to helping people develop their faith through reflecting on their prayer and their everyday lives.

Mrs Janice Smith (Marriott), is a Baptist pastor presently on leave, with a special interest in prayer and spirituality.

Ms Frances Thorsen is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, marriage and family therapist, spiritual director and member of the Society of Friends. She initiated the Ministry of Listening and Care, and is convenor of the spiritual formation program with the Australian Quaker Yearly Meeting for those called to be spiritual companions.

Sister Tess Veenker MSC is a retreat leader and spiritual director, and a religious sister with the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. She is Provincial of this Order.

Rev Dick Wallace is an Anglican priest with a particular love of the healing ministry and quiet days ministry.

Rev. Marian Welford is a retired Baptist minister with wide pastoral experience in a variety of contexts. She is committed to helping provide hospitable space for people to spend time with God.

Rev Andrew Woff is Regional Minister for the Baptist Union of Victoria with a particular interest in facilitating spiritual growth through pastoral conversation and retreat ministry.

Joan Wright-Howie is a Uniting Church minister, mother and spiritual director. Joan has a background in drama and using bibliodrama in Christian worship and learning contexts. For the last two years, she has been developing and promoting a prayer and discernment resource for Uniting Church called Lacuna.
