As urban contemplatives we are offering an embodied life workshop with a question: How can we better practice being contemplatives in the city, growing in our awareness of the fragility and beauty of ecological systems? We believe that there are ways of attending to ourselves in place (with inner and outer awareness) without having to go long distances into the country. And believe this is worthwhile work for our times particularly as we move out of winter towards the warmer growing months. There will be guided meditative work with some gentle walking (up to 1.5km) and opportunities to share if comfortable.

The Nangak Tamboree Sanctuary is on Wurundjeri Country and includes the vital wetlands that become Darebin Creek. It is also in the middle of an ecological learning environment at La Trobe University’s Bundoora campus, itself a long-term regenerative project after many years of exploitation. Nangak Tamboree is an important commitment for us as settlers: it means respecting/sharing/looking after the waterway in the Woiwurrung language.

Nangak Tamboree Wildlife Sanctuary is at Ironbark Hut, La Trobe Ave, Bundoora.

Cost: $22 for Over 25s and $12 for Under 25s.

Meet at Wildlife Sanctuary Carpark at 9.45am, bring water bottle and lunch to eat afterwards, also something waterproof such as a jacket to sit on.  You may need warm comfortable layers and walking shoes. The track is about 1.5km. Please do not attend if you are unwell or have respiratory symptoms.

Keren works alongside gardeners in their own places with the business Wagtail Gardens and is a pastor for faith and the environment at St Luke's Baptist Community in Abbotsford. In that work she is finding her own rhythm in an embodied writing and research practice integrating work completed in a Master of Urban Horticulture (University of Melbourne) and a Master of Theology (University of Divinity). Keren has been a student of embodied living with Jennifer Guild for around 7 years.

Jennifer has a background in dance, physiotherapy and as a practitioner of the Feldenkrais Method™ of awareness through movement. She is a teacher of the Embodied Life™ work developed by Russell Delman which combines meditation, contemplative movement and embodied listening. She is also a spiritual companion and teaches in formation programs at WellSpring. She finds embodied awareness an important way of sensing and living from a place of deep relationship between inner and outer life/Life. Keren’s sharing of her embodied experience in relation to her work in gardening, environment and faith has inspired Jennifer and they are both excited to offer this workshop on embodied contemplation within this environment.
